Mayor & Council

Elections for Council Members are held every two years. Term of office for the Mayor is two years, and four years for Council Members. Elections for Mayor and Council are held on Election Day, the first Tuesday in November (see Rockingham County Voter Registrar for additional information). The voting precinct for Town of Dayton residents is located in the Assembly Room at the Dayton Municipal Building (Mason Street entrance at the flagpole) for all elections.

RJ has lived in Dayton since 2015 when he and his wife, Kimberly, purchased their first home. He loves the small town atmosphere that Dayton has, the amenities that make it a great place for his kids, and the events that make it a great place for everyone. He was appointed to Town Council in August of 2018 and elected in the November 2018 Special Election.

 

Professionally, RJ serves as the Associate Director of the Office of Student Accountability and Restorative Practices at James Madison University. He graduated from JMU in 2010 with a B.A. in Political Science and received his Master’s Degree in College Student Development from Appalachian State University in 2012. His hobbies include skateboarding, running and cycling in the Shenandoah Valley, and CrossFit.

Sam and his wife, Anita, found their forever home in Dayton in 2012. Sam retired in 2018 as a Sales Manager after 36 years in the Automobile Industry. Anita is employed by Shenandoah Growers Inc. in the accounting department. They enjoy road trips, back-yard cookouts with family & friends, evening walks, and being grandparents. Sam also has a love for sports that has allowed him to play softball, basketball, participate in track & field, and even coach AAU basketball over the years. Sam says “we feel blessed now to say Dayton gives our family peaceful evenings, fun events, and a great place to live.”

Jeff is the Corporate Financial Services Director at Truck Enterprises, Inc.  During the winter, he officiates High School Wrestling in the Valley.  He enjoys all kinds of outdoor activities, and is a big fan of college football and NASCAR.

Todd and Julia Collier have been living in Dayton for the past seven years.  They first came to the Valley with the US Navy in 1990 and have considered Rockingham County “home” ever since.  They have raised three children and are blessed with a wonderful daughter-in-law.  Todd is the minister for Valley Church of Christ in Harrisonburg.  Julia is a licensed professional counselor and supervisor for National Counseling Group and works helping children and families in our local schools.  Todd was elected to office in November of 2016.  Todd is an active band booster at Turner Ashby High School. His hobbies include cooking and traveling over Virginia looking at historical sites.  He is also a two time cancer survivor.

Councilperson Cary Jackson is married to his wife Stacie and they just celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. Stacie is employed by Valley Community Services Board in Staunton where she is the Infant and Toddler Connection manager. They have lived in South Breeze for thirteen years and have three children. Cameron is a sophomore at Mary Washington University where he serves as a resident assistant. Payton is a junior at Turner Ashby where he is a three-year varsity wrestler and Emma is a seventh grader at Wilbur Pence where she participates in track and spends most of her free time at the barn with the horses.

Cary and Stacie own Which Wich Superior Sandwiches in Charlottesville. They opened in 2011 and continue to be a top performing restaurant in the system. In addition, he worked for Sysco Food Services of VA and Hospitality Hotel Group.

Cary enjoys being active in the community and is currently the President of Ashby Recreational Association.

They chose Dayton to raise their family because of the safe and friendly environment.

Tara owns and operates The Rustic Oracle located on College Street in Dayton. She enjoys home projects, spending time with her family, evening walks and making people laugh.
